  •  It's across the board (6+ / 0-)

companies EVERYWHERE are depressing wages, increasing workloads, refusing to hire enough people - and so what happens is, both the people who are working and the people who aren't become desperate.

The difference is, in retail, conditions were already barely just "okay" - so it's really easy to turn "barely okay" into "bad" and then "really terrible."

I don't know what it would take to reverse this trend.  It's a seriously scary time right now.

that, ya know, he is taking home less now than he did three years ago.....Christies ordered pay cuts to all supers and the deductions for medical and pension have become steep, and raises are now tied to the inflation rate. And for this he is at 70% approval.

we've had our budget slashed and slashed, and I now have less pay than when I began this job. Not only less pay, but now I am filling in for 7 other departments that have had their staff slashed.  So I'm doing 8 jobs for less than the price of one.

I cling to this job only because I am that close to vesting in retirement and I am too old now to  work to rebuild a new retirement fund/plan.

the workers could get together and demand better treatment . . . you know, take advantage of the power of numbers.

Didn't see your comment first, sorry.

This is RIGHT.  The solution is UNIONS.

Glad we both saw the obvious solution - too bad unions have had their guts eviscerated in the past decades.

But that was the plan all along - destroy ANY impediment to employers being able to dictate to their indentured serfs employees
