  •  Could you please differentiate between big (17+ / 0-)

corporate retail stores and those of us who own and operate small, single-location stores? I do not treat my employees that way. They each have a regular schedule and I go out of my way to accommodate them if they need time off, often at the expense of my own schedule. My son works for another family-owned store in the area and he has a regular schedule. If they need someone to cover a shift, they call and ask if he is available. If he isn't, they call someone else. Of all the family-owned local retail store owners I've met, I've never run across someone who would do this to their employees. I'm not saying there aren't any, but it's too damaging to a small business to have employees who are angry and upset with the management.

    •  You've done a good job of distinguishing (6+ / 0-)

As a small store, you do generally have to be nicer.  I wish you good fortune!

We had a procedure at the store I worked with, spelled out in the union contract.  If something came up that management needed somebody to work, they would call from the top of the seniority list, working their way to the bottom.  If a person declined to work on three occasions, they were taken off the to-call list.
