  •  The kind of pump storage power plant (0+ / 0-)

you are talking about may not be economically viable because a design for pump storage with two massive water storage units of equal size at very different elevations will effectively rule out the engineering feasibility of doing that at the vast majority of potential siting locations in the United States.

    •  it's too damn flat (0+ / 0-)

in many places, alas.  It's an interesting conundrum, since large scale integration of wind can also provide "backup" power, such that the need for storage is reduced.  I'm wondering how little one could get away with. Certainly a lot of folks are trying to build good dispatchable storage.

    •  Hydro Association (0+ / 0-)

Suggests there is a lot that can be done to increase pumped hydro capacity. Decoupling existing pumped hydro from the coal plants is a good first step.

NAS suggests that we can integrate 20% renewables without much work, after that storage and grid work will be necessary.

    •  Actually Pumped storage is easy (0+ / 0-)

It is a simple technology and you can make it any size.  Having a bigger elevation change means less water has to be used.  California derives a very large portion of their firm energy from the Central Valley Project reservoirs, some of which like Whiskeytown (a relatively small reservoir) are pumped storage.
