  •  Ok...you want a 'familiar'? Just one word 'dog'! (2+ / 0-)

What other critter is so eager to share food and spit with you, hump your leg, and get very very familiar with every animal aspect of you and require you to be familiar with all its bathroom needs?

Cats, in my limited experience, don't come very close to craving the sort of constant closeness dogs want. Sneeze with a dog on your lap, no problem, perhaps a short glance of concern and a quick return to fully reclined snooze position. But with a cat its claws will need to be extracted from your legs with forceps. Ok, sure, at that point the dog might have to leap off to go chase the cat...but, trust me, you'd have wanted that anyway.  Answer the phone while working at the computer and the dog will run with you to the phone to bark at the caller in case it's another dog or to scare off potential prank-calling cats doing random dialing. The cat, formerly warming your lap and purring, will use that moment to jump up onto your keyboard and bat at the cursor while stepping on the Delete key, and then, after cleaning up the document of all those silly dark blotches on the screen, it will eventually put paws on the Ctrl and Alt and Delete key to give you a really fresh start.  If cats could type and incant 'FORMAT C:' they would probably do so whenever the moon was full and the litter box needs changing, or just to show off to the dog. Sure, the dog will lick the screen to make it feel better if it looks blue...but doesn't that seem a more familiar sort of act?

(Yeah, I know. A familiar passes between the dark and light worlds, blah blah.  'Familiar' just seems like a sub-optimal word choice to me.)
