      (I'm a native - I can poke a little fun at our accent.
      Accents, actually - the Lowcountry has its own lovely flavor, as do the Midlands and the Upstate.)

            ...but I always thought it referred to elevation or something, like it was below sea level.

            To the uninitiated it sounds like a bad description to use.  I do remember two shows I saw concentrated on the local cuisine of Charleston.
