    As they left the Senate gallery, a police officer approached and asked them to follow him. The three walked downstairs to a public hallway, where they were peppered with questions: “What’s your name?” “Where are you from?” “What are your Social Security numbers?” The officer left to run a background check on the women, who were instructed to sit on a bench.

      IANAL, but my understanding is that the federal government can only ask for SS# in relation to providing SS benefits (including Medicare). It is NOT a federal ID number, and I believe the women would have been within their rights to refuse that information, or replacing it with information from their ID (e.g., driver's license number).

        according to my First Amendment professor in law school.  I never looked it up for myself, however.  So take that for what it's worth.
