request for federal aid to another, regardless of the cause.  And no one is smearing "all the Dems in the state."  Texas is a deep red state whose federal congressional delegation is overwhelmingly Republican, and the great majority of the time those congress members deserve all the opprobrium that can be heaped upon them.  And the state legislature, also firmly in the grip of Republicans, are responsible for the lax laws and oversight of Texas industries.  How in the world does that smear the state's Dem's?

that?  This post (read it) did not read opprobrium on the delegation, it did so on 'Texas' and is typical of kos's adolescent writing.

And the state legislature, also firmly in the grip of Republicans,
It's obvious you know nothing about the state history, much of which was majority dem.  But have fun with your fail.

The Republicans took over the TX state senate in the mid-'90s, but they had been gaining seats in the state legislature for over twenty years, since Richard Nixon implemented his southern strategy.  Until Nixon, the only Republican presidential candidates to have won the state since Reconstruction were Herbert Hoover and Dwight Eisenhower.

In 2000 the Republican state senate appointed a redistricting board that gerrymandered the districts to favor the Republicans, and as a result the Republicans took over the state house in the 2002 election.  Almost immediately they redistricted the state map again at the behest of the federal congressional delegation, thereby assuring what Tom DeLay at the time called a "permanent Republican majority" in the state.

Nixon had won Texas in 1972, and the only reason the Republicans didn't win Texas in 1976 is because Nixon  had resigned in disgrace and been pardoned by Ford.  It also helped that Jimmy Carter was a Southerner.

Since Carter, however, the state has been on a fast slide from just socially conservative into full-fledged right-wing radicalism both socially and economically.
