  •  funny note about your wrens (4+ / 0-)

I was IDing a small bird here and it is the western wren which is similar to the Carolina's if I remember correctly.

The barn swallows have been back for a few weeks and they have been circling my neighbor's house. He let them nest and raise their brood in his porch last year but he removed their nests to paint the house in the fall. I wonder if they will try to start over or will they find another location. I also wonder if he will let them since his porch was a mess from their droppings.

is Bewick's wren - from which our own bwren derives her name.

The Carolina Wrens seem to be careful not to foul the area around their nests (at least in my experience) - quite unlike barn swallows.

Heard coyotes howling this evening.  Only the second time since we moved here - a nice reminder of the west.  They were quite far away and hard to hear over the limpkins and great horned owl which were much closer.  It is a cold night or we wouldn't have heard them at all.  When it was warm last week the green tree frogs were almost deafening.

Unfortunately, barn swallows had evolved, before barns appeared, to build their nests on cliff sides where their poo would fall a distance with no lingering impact.

We have violet-green swallows that nest in a couple of cavities in our house each season, and they are quite fastidious around their nest sites and even clear out any poo from the nest left by their hatchlings.
