  •  Since this is New England (8+ / 0-)

All the houses have basements.  A couple of feet of dirt, and 6" of concrete can stop some rather energetic weaponry.  Just put down a cushion, and take a seat on the floor.

The frost line is deep enough (over 4') that switching from footings, to a usable basement is the price of the stairs, and another foot or so of wall.

WET blankets/quilts in the bath and hang - NAIL them - them across windows.

I've heard of it used on ad hoc ranges, with the blankets folded up several times, but mostly just to limit the wear on the materials behind it, and never for any kind of rifle ammo.

It's probably slightly effective at limiting the damage to scrap wood or discarded appliances that one might use to set up a range in the country, but I wouldn't use it to protect a person or anything I cared about.

That said, the here goal isn't to stop a bullet shot up close, but to slow down a stray bullet shot from a pistol several blocks away, and if you're already boarding up the windows, maybe several layers of wet towels would slightly help.

Me, I'll just stay in my basement and keep my head down.
