  •  Learning lessons is important. But also, coming (3+ / 0-)

together to act on what we've learned -- what we've seen as this fiasco has unfolded in Congress -- that's important too.

Gabby Giffords has started a new organization, Americans for Responsible Solutions.  Like, for instance, accepting the Second Amendment but passing the background check bill that 90 percent of Americans want!

Money is flowing into the group from some of those 90 percent.  They're going to start running ads next week -- thanking Senators who voted for the bill, and addressing the constituents of those who didn't.

Gabby, her former chief of staff, and others are prepared to give some consistent leadership through ARS.  THey're prepared to work through the next election, and however many are necessary after that, so that there can be a force to counter-balance the NRA.  Not by sleasy lobbying and using money to buy votes, but through the democratic process.  Let those who sell out to the NRA face voters who have been reminded exactly who that was.

We have surges of activity around gun violence, and then it dies away until the next massacre.  THis new organization may develop into a steady presence for education and electoral challenges, one that can finally make elected officials pay a price at the polls if they let the NRA tell them what to think and how to vote.

For me, one of the most imoprtant ways to stand by Gabby Giffords is to join her new organization, and pay attention when they ask for money, volunteers, signatures, or whatever they need to be our continuing voice.
