    •  Depends on the state (7+ / 0-)

but in most states, 18 for longarms (rifles and shotguns), 21 for handguns.

And, of course, they have to pass a background check, if the weapon is sold to them by an FFL or if the state where they bought their firearm requires a background check for that particular transaction.

But not if the firearm is sold to them by a non-FFL third party in most states.

Because that would lead to registration and confiscation. Somehow.

Interstate face to face sales of long guns are legal under Federal law, if and only if the transaction would be legal in both the seller and buyer's states of residence.

All interstate handgun transfers are required to go through an FFL.

So if personal sales of long guns are illegal in Massachusetts, they'd be illegal in Vermont (assuming the buyer was from MA.)

Of course, if the laws were the only problem, there wouldn't be any drugs...

For example, here in NC, the sheriff is allowed to issue a pistol purchase permit to someone that is 18.  With it they can't buy from an FFL but may buy in a face to face transaction.

          •  The FFL restriction is a matter of Federal law. (0+ / 0-)

For example, California requires all transfers to go through an FFL, except for those between immediate family members. So, while my 14 year old daughter can't buy any gun, I can give her one as a present... even a handgun. Although I would still have to buy her ammo until she turned 21. (Substitute 18 for long guns and their ammunition.)
