If they didn't do this, and someone got in the wrong place at the wrong time and got shot by the police, then that would be deemed evidence that we're on the road to a police state where the cops don't care about civilian deaths.

This suspect is heavily armed and has survived being in at least two active, live-fire firefights with the cops. He's tossed explosives at the police and he (and/or his brother) have lobbed maybe-live / maybe-not explosive devices here and there as they traveled.

In addition to being pursuit of a criminal (and, sure, a terrorist), this is the definition of a public safety emergency. Urging -- even strongly -- that people voluntarily stay indoors and out of the way is reasonable and prudent, not fascist.

You're going to shut down a metropolitan area of nearly a million people because of one person on the loose?  Unless that person is believed to be carrying a WMD, seems like a dangerous precedent.

      •  Automatic weapons, and explosive devices. (4+ / 0-)

Close enough to WMD that I am glad to stay out of the way of the professionals.

      •  It's an actual still-unfolding (7+ / 0-)

real life emergency situation. I'll worry about the creep of the police state when it's not actually still likely to end with anybody getting shot or any more bombs blowing up on any more random bystanders, in the immediate sense.

(where the older brother was declared dead) were that the brother had massive trauma to his midsection consistent with being run over. Speculation is that the at-large suspect may have driven over his own brother in his getaway.  I think giving this dangerous guy a wide berth is warranted.  Hoping that they find him quickly.

Well, their bombs at the marathon injured what, 180?

Look, I believe very strongly in civil rights. And Bostonians still have them! This isn't martial law. You won't be arrested or shot for going outside (although in the area being actively searched right now, that's a singularly bad idea). But encouraging people to voluntarily stay inside makes them safer, and makes the cops safer.

This happens sometimes for natural causes, too, you know. I'm in the Kansas City area, and one of the big snowstorms earlier this year was bad enough, fast enough, that authorities here asked everyone in the area to please just stay inside and off the roads; you see, enough people had tried to drive and gotten stuck even in the middle of the highways, that the plows couldn't get around them to clear the roads. Most people, at least eventually, did. How long did that last? About a day. Do I feel it infringed on my civil liberties? Not a damn bit.

That's the same thing as is happening in Boston. Except instead of snow, they have bombs. If you get stuck in the snow then eventually someone will get there to tow you out. If you get stuck in a bomb...

        •  I should have made myself clearer (0+ / 0-)

A "dirty" bomb, anthrax, etc.  That's what I meant.

          •  No, I know what you meant (5+ / 0-)

I just disagree with your standard for public caution.

Here in KC, before the cops and the mayor told everyone to, seriously, just stay home, they had already announced that major highways were impassible. Looking out the breakroom window at work, I saw over a dozen people try and fail to drive down 435 anyway, including at least a couple of yahoos driving east on the westbound side of the (major, divided) highway, presumably in the mistaken belief that that would work better.

My civil rights were not meaningfully curtailed when the cops asked if everyone could please just cut that the hell out and stay home.

Boston doesn't have a problem with snow. It has a problem with bombs. If you're in Boston, and you're not near the epicenter of this, and you really have to go out, you still can. But otherwise, this is still a chaotic situation, and the worst result for a civilian would be to wind up in the crossfire of a shootout, or the path of a high speed chase, or the blast radius of another pressure cooker bomb. The cops can't guarantee the safety of people out and about, so they're asking that there not be people out and about.

And that's not a "police state".
