    IMO, some of this gets into "disaffected loners" versus "organized terrorists."  I can see the possibility that these guys were more like the Unabomber than al Qaeda, that this was not a big one-off political statement, but maybe more a new way of life.  Maybe they planned to do more bombings, maybe more in Boston.  I can see them thinking this is a new hobby that they planned to engage in in their backyards, like serial killers or arsonists, more than a strategic strike after which they would retreat and regroup.

      These guys remind me of the Chowchilla Kidnappers: Young guys that talk themselves into some criminal enterprise with no real plan after the initial action. Working on the assumption that they couldn't possibly be identified, so no contingency plan in place. (Of course the big difference is that in the Chowchilla case, there was no loss of life.)
