    my Mom is from Boston, born in 1933 - and she told me once about standing on the beach on Cape Cod during WWII and watching burning freighters and tankers sink just a few miles offshore.

    From what I know of the war in the Atlantic, that must have been during the initial period of our entry, before we realized that we needed convoys and a blackout.  All the U-boats needed to do was to get a ship between them and a city, and they were perfectly backlit, without any escort protection.  It was not pretty.

      The ship sinkings off the US coast were the result of Operation Drumbeat.

      US Admiral King was so anti-British that he rejected all advice about the necessity of convoys. Not until US shipping losses became unbearable did he reluctantly order a change.
