I'm all for weaning ourselves off of car culture.

Barring major drastic catastrophe, this won't happen in a day or even in a decade.

But having many of those who - to repeat myself ad nauseaum - are buying a new car this year anyway, having those people buy cars that need no (or almost no) oil, will be a huge hit on the oil industry. And therefore, a huge boost in the battle to stop climate change.

Conversely: if your only vision to stop global warming is that 100% of Americans will be as green in their daily lives as yourself, and if you are morally unwilling to accept other avenue as helpful - then you are essentially guaranteeing our failure.

to come from somewhere up above but climate change is a problem of consumption...our consumption.  It isn't a hands off problem...we all have to contribute.

Getting an electric car nowadays is very far from being "hands-off." It might mean charging with extension cords every night instead of just rolling into a gas station once a week. It means having to carefully plan any drive beyond the ordinary daily ones.

It also means putting a lot of your savings into a technology that isn't yet mature, which is quite a risk.

We did it in order to help bring the change.

And I will continue to feel great with having bought (or rather, leased) an electric car, and will try to convince others to do likewise - no matter how many purity trolls insinuate that I'm some sort of lazy degenerate consumerist  (as if they know me at all), for even daring to discuss the topic of buying cars here (as if the universe outside the virtual orange pages has ceased to exist).

Try to broaden your horizons as to what "change" might consist of. It will greatly increase your ability to stop climate change.
