by a North Korean assassination team whose mission was to kill the President of South Korea, Park Chung Hee, in 1968. (I was there as a Peace Corps Volunteer.) Just before the police closed in on them, one of them tossed a hand grenade on a public bus, killing the driver and several passengers. These deaths served no purpose, even from the twisted North Korean point of view. It made no sense at the time, and still doesn't.

Cyanide-laced Kool-Aid at the Jim Jones compound in the jungle makes no sense.

The Branch Davidians setting fire to their own compound outside Waco TX makes no sense.

The Heaven's Gate Mother Ship suicides make no sense.

Aum Shinrikyo putting Sarin in the Tokyo subway makes no sense.

There are dozens of other such cases.

Sometimes we are dealing with crazies. But at least whether that is so in this case should become clear.
