in your instance and mine do not see beyond race, and that is the problem with all of this sort of behavior. It also can go the other way where people use race to make people scared.

My instance was waiting for a boyfriend on the street in my car late at night. He needed a ride home from work. In Pasadena, Calif.

Parts of Pasadena are known for having crime problems so I was being very careful when a man walked up to my car and started talking at me even though my windows were up. When I started up the car he laid into me about how I was doing this because he was black.

Seriously I couldn't really see what color his skin was and it didn't matter, he could have been purple or green. It was the fact that I being female had no desire to be approached by a stranger at that time and place. Especially one who was clearly hostile.

I can say this is not the first time a person put me down because of the color of my skin. Being a very fair skinned person in Southern California resulted in a number of comments over the years, especially as a child. I won't say it was discrimination. I do think it lead me to have a more open mind about others and to think about how others may feel. It made me more aware of negativity towards people.

I do think your diary was good. Awareness is never a bad thing.
