  •  police state (17+ / 0-)

There's a geography aspect to this.  If some people can speak of a "police state", that doesn't mean all people can. What is happening in the War on (Some) Drugs shows many aspects of "police state". Lots of things police do in black/brown and poor areas would not be tolerated in rich or middle class white areas. Kids get put in the school-to-prison pipeline for doing same things that kids in other areas get away with.

I've been in city council meetings where the council members are unresponsive to community pain (14yo "accidentally" killed by a police officer whose gun "misfired"). The council members looked as if they were only sitting there because it was pragmatically necessary to let family and friends scream and blow off steam ... but there was no trial for involuntary manslaughter and the city is now paying pension to the killer.

And there were police and their supporters who were, in essence, saying they're heroes because they're heroes, because all police are like the police who are heroes.

And I'm afraid that even more so that when a racially profiling local bad-apple cop is racial-profiling (locally and elsewhere) and the Black/Hispanic/poor/protesting person objects the bad-apple cop is going to escalate, demanding, you ungrateful perp. I'm a hero. You're supposed to be like those cooperating Bostonians who OBEYED their hero police.

Even though the cop is being a tin god and had no reason for the stop.

It seems Boston police had community cooperation and trust, but the mainstream media was using overly "law & order" language to describe what was happening ("lockdown" & "paralysed", etc). I am afraid that this event will be cynically used the way 9/11 was cynically used,

Giving birth (giving life) should be a gift not an obligation or women and poor people are 2nd class by definition
