    though and exactly zero scandal free incumbents have lost since 1992 when their party's presidential nominee garners a majority simultaneously. Even in the House this held true last year in seats that weren't heavily redistricted. Thune would be a suicide run in 2016 unless he runs for president.

    Johnson needs to set his sights lower if he wants elective office as the state is just not hospitable to Democrats anymore.

      SD voters are still willing to consider Dems for open seats, but Thune is safe barring a scandal. As you say, incumbents who are above water in states that generally favor their party don't lose. Al Franken is less popular than Thune and MN is much more purple than SD, and he's considered to be fairly safe.
