I'm not that way, though. I'm the most retiring, conflict-averse person in a mile. I just don't see the point anymore. The bellicose remain red faced and puffy. The monied remain monied. Even good natured explanations can make them entrench, if they've done bad in the past.

I write, and I hope, and I hope most of all for the younger to be able to achieve what we did not. We saw it coming, but it wasn't bleak or stark enough for the rest of the USA. Now it is.

that was a blistering and accurate attack on all kinds of privilege and smug behaviour. My (on the whole) wonderful spouse tends not to see problems that aren't right in front of him, and can border on the attitude that the poor bring it on themselves in these enlightened times. However, he also can't bring himself to accept documentation of tent cities in America, or that 30% of the children in Britain are impoverished (most links are pdfs). He just gets defensive and a funny shade of pink, so there you go.
To an extent, I think it's because most people don't realise that their lives depend good luck and a reasonable amount of good health, neither of which they are necessarily responsible for. The individual who succeeds despite all obstacles is an exception, but provides a convenient myth.

I suspect that we'd all prefer beliefs which leave us innocent, if possible, or, if not innocent, thoroughly scourged. Most of all, people are afraid of finding out that they're incomplete or powerless to alleviate the evil.

I had the advantage, if we can call it that, of being strange(d) by my health and my beliefs, and that made me confront my powerlessness. However, that can lead to quietism and pietism, and I confess that I have too often joined the defeated. My hope now is to immunize others. Let them know from the beginning what the years showed.
