    Why not borrow an argument from conservatives, who claim that estate taxes are "already taxed," whether it be income, dividends, capital gains or interest?

    Speaking as a person living in a state with no sales tax (Oregon), I can tell you that I buy more stuff than I did in NY, where the sales tax was at least 8 percent. It actually takes you a while to get used to the idea that the price on the tag or shelf is actually the amount you will pay, and quite frankly, sales taxes are often a barrier to high ticket items like cars, appliances, home construction work, and so forth, especially if you're on a fixed (which, like with my cat, doesn't mean repair) income.
