Swami Uptown opened it with an invocation. That would be Swami Satchidananda. Then, again this is a 43 1/2 year old memory, Bert Sommer was up first and then Richie...but it might have been the other way around.

The swami came along later that afternoon. Bert Sommer (who I'd never heard of before and never heard of after) was after Havens.

      •  so I've just read! (7+ / 0-)

memory is a strange thing. I was reading that wiki entry. At least it's true (and my memory agrees with what's written there) that Tim Hardin, Arlo Guthrie and Joan Baez played that first night. I remember Joan's voice sounding so beautiful in the late night air.

saw him there.  Still have his album.  Passed away in 1990.

And of course it rained.  Arlo had to stop playing for a bit and move back under some cover. But everyone was just milling, meeting everyone w/in reaching distance, just bein' there. Still have one day of the three days of tickets. As the fence was coming down, there was a guy trying to hold the fence up and take tickets at the same time.  He got a hold of two and I managed to hold onto Sunday's.

but he was pretty inconsequential even back then.

festival. Things were already running late and the gate was chaos as they had opened it up to everybody (that was why I stilll had my tickets until my ex-wife stole them years later). I've heard people claim the movie and/or album were chronological...wrong, wrong, wrong.

I'd tip you but they cut off my tip box. The TSA would put Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad on the no-fly list.
