To be sure, I was a big fan as a young'un.  Among other things, when I was 11 years old, Grace Slick was pretty much my icon of the woman I'd grow up to marry, of that I was certain.

Let's see...1971...by that time, that first Kantner/Slick album, and another Kantner project that was a sort of opaque concept album called Blows Against the Empire, weren't bad really, and neither were the final JA albums, Bark and Long John Silver, but I don't recommend going out of your way to seek any of them out.  However, after that came Jefferson Starship which I don't really want to honor with the classification "rock and roll band", even preceded by the adjective "bad".

No, what I always heard was that they could be totally unbalanced, out-of-synch, out-of-tune and seemingly oblivious to each other live, going back to the Fillmore/Matrix days.  Sometimes, not so much I guess.  I have some boots from gigs at Fillmore and (of all places) Hollywood Bowl taking up disk space that bear that out.  The great songwriting and simmering power of their talent as players gets totally lost in sloppy, meandering, overlong indifference.

OTOH, there was a lesser-known followup Woodstock album (called, appropriately enough Woodstock Two), with an mind-blowingly lethal JA double shot --"Won't You Try/Saturday Afternoon" and "Eskimo Blue Day" that absolutely slays, probably the best recorded moments from them I've ever heard in any form.
