    He tweeted his junk.

    Insanely stupid. Massively embarrassing.

But he did not go MIA for days with his mistress. He did not use state funds for it. He did not have a weeping press conference to say that he intended to keep on tweeting his junk because it was so wonderful.

His (and Sanford's) personal lives are not relevant to us, but if one were to ignore someone's slimebaggyness, you could point to the fact that Weiner is still married to the same woman and seems to have worked it all out. Contrast with Sanford who uses his children as a prop at victory parties and as an excuse for law-breaking trespass, and doesn't even give them a heads up that it is coming.

    Weiner. By a long shot.

he had done everything that Sanford did.  Most Democrats would.  Because elections are a choice, and for most Democrats, someone who will vote solidly Democratic down the line, but did everything Sanford did, is far preferable to Mr. Super Clean Republican would vote with Boehner down the line.

My point was not to compare Weiner and Sanford. You can put somebody else's name in there --Bill Clinton, or whomever -- who's done some pretty disgusting things in his/her personal life.  My point is that most people will vote for somebody with a sordid past who will vote with their interests in Congress over somebody who is squeaky clean but who, if elected, will vote against everything they stand for.

Sure, that sordid past may cause some people to think about staying home.  But a smart politician knows that the best way to bring them out is to say, but the other candidate will vote for (insert position that horrifies your base here).  Then they will come out to vote AGAINST the opposition.  And that's what Sanford is doing.

It's actually smart politics on his part.  He's going ask people to vote AGAINST a liberal Democrat, rather than for him.
