  •  FWIW - I agree with James and Kate. (7+ / 0-)

It seems to me that NN taking place in Detroit does several things, far from least of which is the Left "walking the walk" by supporting an area that has been under siege for far too long.

It would help shine a spot light on all the issues James raises while letting the community of Detroit, and the cities like them, know that they are not alone or forgotten.

I find that vitally important on multiple levels; politically, economically, and morally.

That's building things from the ground up.

    •  Thanks, Ono! (4+ / 0-)

I attended the U.S. Social Forum when it was held in Detroit in June of 2010, and though it happened in my hometown I was seriously impressed by the variety of grassroots activism happening locally.
There are plenty of "fun" things to do in Detroit, some of which are not my cup of tea (see, e.g., casinos). But there are also some really great opportunities for education and networking by people who are willing to take the time for that, too.

Some DKos series & groups worth your while: Black Kos, Native American Netroots, KosAbility, Monday Night Cancer Club. If you'd like to join the Motor City Kossacks, send me a Kosmail.
