  •  Remember that the new "liberal (0+ / 0-)

is the old moderate republican, so "liberals" don't want to talk about unions or climate change and are in favor of austerity

    •  remember too that actual progressive liberalism (0+ / 0-)

is an unpopular position---which is why progressives can't win elections and can't be taken seriously inside the Eisenhower Republican--oops, I mean the Democratic--Party.

The media gives people what they want to hear. If progressives were a powerful political force that had to be reckoned with, the media would be more than happy to trumpet our views so people will watch and they can sell ad time for soap flakes and breakfast cereals.  But alas, nobody--even half of the Democratic Party--wants to hear progressive viewpoints. So the media can't use it to sell corn flakes, and therefore has no interest in it. (PS--that was EXACTLY the same way they treated conservative viewpoints prior to 1980, when conservatives became an actual political force rather than an ignored group of nobodies.)

As I recall, the planks tend to poll rather well, such as functioning health care system, a more equitable income distribution, investment in public infrastructure and education, and dealing with climate change, for example.

I think the issue is that this idea that it's unpopular is a self-fulfilling prophecy.  Democrats believe it, so run from these positions, which means no one is out there really advocating for them in a big way.
