  •  The unpersuadable aren't our target, the ones (5+ / 0-)

    they haven't yet indoctrinated are.

If the only thing that people growing up hear is the crap spouted by the wingnuts, that's their baseline, it's all they know. It's 'common knowledge' and  what 'everyone knows'. I mean who notices that Froot Loops is misspelled, or that the lyric to 'Oh, Susanna' doesn't make any sense, (Rained all night the day I left. The weather, it was dry...)? We grew up with them, so we don't question them.

Keeping up the argument with those we know we can't convince is to demonstrate to the audience that there is a saner explanation. And that standing up to the nutcases isn't lethal, of itself, just annoying.

Argue to inform the audience and provide sane alternatives, don't waste time arguing in private. Turning away from fruitless arguments is natural, but keeping it up to inform bystanders and offer alternatives is most of what we can do on a day to day basis. And abandoning the field to the crazies is what they're trying to get us to do. It's what we've done for thirty years and look how well it's worked out.  For them.

Tying them up in knots and giving them the rope to hang themselves with by means of Socratic questions can be a lot of fun. The blowhards love to pontificate and show off how much they think they know. So ask them questions and take the answers further until they trip themselves or their logic breaks. Tasty. ;-)
