I wanted some Nancy Drew books, which weren't in the school library of course. My dad said he would  buy them for me if I read two classics for each one he got.  (I had to read the classics first.) So I asked the school librarian for "some classics", but she was puzzled what they could be. As for the Hardy Boys, I read a lot of them too. At a junior high where I taught for a while, I asked the librarian to order a set of Hardy Boys, which she readily did, but the set was stolen in a week.
