    the plant was literally the center of their town. In a small community like that, it just doesn't cross peoples' minds that the individuals involved would act callously and put them at risk. I mean, this was just a distributor, not a huge multinational. I highly doubt anyone in West thought that they were being exploited for profit in the past.

    It may be misguided, but understandable. I am sure some of it is cultural, but I'd think the culture is more "small town" than "texan" in identity.

      town living.

      If this happened in my small town, that family -- and I don't care how deep their roots ran -- would be facing most people wanting to run them out. They'd be sued, and their family reputation tainted for the rest of history.

      There's often very good reason there were two sides of the tracks going through small towns.

        I get what you're saying. There very well may be some from the "other side of the tracks" that feel that way, so this anecdote may not be a unanimous representation of the feelings of the town as a whole.
