  •  yes you can buy powder both smokeless and black (9+ / 0-)

    both at stores and online.

any online sale must be shipped hazmat and signed for with id.

Lots of people reload ammunition in this country and around the world.  Smokeless powder is not an explosive at all, it burns not explodes and as such is classified as a propellant and as an accelerant in a fire but it is not an explosive, any more than gasoline which can also be made to explode if you confine it.

Black is a low explosive and is used by many for hunting and shooting primitive weapons.  Yes it can be made into a bomb, so can lots of other common household things.

This is an extremely rare occurrence and it seems so far that the powder used was from fireworks not gunpowder at all...... and yet you write this big essay on gunpowder and the evils of the current regulatory system?

You do know that in much of the country it is perfectly legal to make your own fireworks also, and all the various powders from Flash to Lift are regularly made in peoples garages all around the country?  Not to mention the model rocket buffs who make black powder lift motors in their garages.......

No it is ridiculous to attempt to create a registry of powder users esp when it is so very rarely used in a crime of any type.

I'd be curious to know, how many bombings occur in the US. Apparently, enough that the ATF will mention black powder as a frequent component. I'm looking for a credible source.

      •  It is so rare the FBI does not have a catetory. (9+ / 0-)

It is listed under "Other."  That includes everything from golf clubs, kitchen chairs and anything else not otherwise listed.

However, crime overall has been on declining for the past five years. Link is to FBI database on violent crimes.

      •  if there's 3 and 2 use black then it's a frequent (9+ / 0-)

        component.

There aren't many bombings in this country thank ghu, esp considering how easy it really is....

However I am not willing to become a English style Security State and imo we are way too close now......

I'd be surprised if you find more than 10-15 a year, most hurting no one, and that is not a valid reason to add even more layers of security theatre on top of what we have already spackled on the walls.....If we change who we are as a country in reaction to a terrorist then hasn't that terrorist accomplished exactly what they wanted? I say we go on with life while flipping them the bird....bullies hate being ignored......

As to taggants, honestly without another entire registry that tracks every round of ammunition and every pound of powder from cradle to grave and considering I am currently using 30+ year old powder and it shoots just fine, this is a long term proposition, with honestly little to no payoff in terms of crimes solved....Just like the Ballistics fingerprinting of new guns, it sounds like a good idea except that in 5 minutes intentionally or just through regular use and wear, the fingerprint changes and all that money spent is down the toilet instead of going into mental health care, income assistance, training and job placement etc.......

And finally, end the "War on (some) Drugs" and we will cut the violent crime rate even further, I'd lay odds on a 70% reduction....It has been falling hard all the while more and more guns have been sold you know...........

...then why do you take the time to attribute statements to others that they do not actually make...?

I mean, surely it isn't because you simply can't respond to the actual arguments made and therefore feel it necessary to make up statements to respond to.

I'm sure the personal insults do something for you, as well, as childish as they are, or, again, you wouldn't take the effort to make them.

Really, you should try responding to the actual arguments people make sometime -- you might learn something from them.  Or, if you prefer, you can continue to respond to things not said.  It's intellectually dishonest, of course, but it require much less mental effort on your part.

        Whatever works for you, really.

        •  you libertarians seem to have trouble with the (0+ / 0-)

          concept of "satire".

Perhaps that's because you are all humor-challenged tight-asses who take themselves wayyy too seriously and think everyone else should take you seriously too.

...that there are so many folks out there, like Rush Limbaugh, who simply lie and, when caught out on it, then try to claim it is "satire" or "humor," and try to blame their own poor behavior on others by claiming that they "have no sense of humor."

So, if you don't want to be called out for that sort of thing, maybe you shouldn't do it.  Really, try engaging in an honest, adult discussion sometime.  You might like it.

            Pretty simple stuff, really.

All you do is scold, scold, scold.  This comment is a perfect example.

You almost never engage in discussion.

                •  You consider this dead-threading? (0+ / 0-)

If so, then I offer my sincere apologies.  When I entered into the discussion, it appeared as though there were still ongoing conversations taking place.

My comments got responded to, and so on -- so I responded to those, etc.

Now, I ask this in all seriousness -- how long after you post a diary do you want comments to carry on?  I've been engaged in diaries in which the discussion goes on for several days.

I understand that some people don't want to worry about a discussion in their diaries after they can't be around to engage in it, so I'll do my best to abide by your wishes in this regard.

...for an actual discussion to take part in.

Instead, all I've been seeing lately are outright falsehoods and childish personal attacks (ludicrously defended with the term "satire").

When that's all people can bring to the discussion, they deserve to be scolded.  You could try to get those on your side of this debate to act in a more adult manner, rather than trying to dodge behind scolding me for calling out their juvenile behavior as what it is.

Failing that, people might start to think that your side can't support their arguments without resorting to such tactics.  It really reflects as poorly on those of you defending the tactics as it does those who use them.

Something to consider, if you want to make your discussions meaningful.  If all you want to do is create strawmen to knock down, well, you're doing a fine job of that so far.

My god, please develop new material!

How can anyone engage in debate with someone who never debates anything?

You recite tired scolds again and again, and when you're called on it all you can say is that they deserve it.

You just get more comical by the minute.

Rather than just defending childish taunts, you are now engaging in them yourself.

And you seem to feel comfortable declaring that others won't engage in real debate.

                    Funny, funny stuff.  Really.

You like precision in words, so let's be precise.  First it was attacks which bothered you, now it seems to be just "childish taunts".  I'm not taunting, I'm asking.

You call people's actions childish, is that not taunting, or attacking?

And you seem very comfortable dodging my question.  How am I to engage in debate with someone who never debates?
