  •  Put a Koran in urine and we'll talk (0+ / 0-)

As a Christian I realize some will do silly things in provoking publicity, including offending religious sensibilities. it doesn't get me TOO bent out of shape. But it does seem that Christians are the ones that are the lone target. Maybe if we rioted and beheaded a few people we'd get a little more respect.

We don't justify murder either. And we do respect the symbols of our faith.

I would point out that guards at Gitmo, I think, were caught urinating on prisoners' Q'rans, if that would meet equivalency criteria.

Within art, there is the movement to confront the dominant culture and challenge the society on its beliefs and practices.  In the US that culture is Christian.  That is why Christians are the "target"; they are over 85% of the population and the laws enacted frequently reflect Christian understanding of morality.  Take the Bible out of public swearing- ins and oaths and we may have some grounds for discussion

My point is Christians may get upset (and really we need to define which particular denominations of the thousands that exist) about being constantly ridiculed. But we don't routinely kill people for that offense. When there is a "Book of Koran" on broadway we can talk.

Islam is not mocked period for fear of reprisal. This countries dominant culture is Judea Christian. But also in art there is search to express truth beauty and knowledge. Cartoons of Muhammad get you killed.  Crucifixes in urine get subsidized. A chasm.

        •  may I point out that those countries are (0+ / 0-)

generally countries with a long history of religious strife or else are nations whose glue is religion as nationalism, for various reasons has not developed.

Example of the former would be Hindus attacking Muslims in India and Bangladesh as heretics

Example of the latter would be the destruction by Western interference of nascent Arab nationalism movements in the 20th Century where religious identity became the equivalent of nationalism.

In contrast, in Europe, nationalism and chauvinism replaced religion as the bone of contention and grounds for war.  In other countries, either that paradigm shift has either not occurred or else was prevented from occurring by outside sources.

After all the cartoons were published in Europe and the people who died were Muslims in Pakistan if I remember.  After all, the vast majority of Muslims are as blase about insults to Mohammed as Christians are to insults to Jesus (which can still cost you a teaching job in the US)

stop subsidizing Israeli bombs and Colombian death-squads maybe I'll work my way down the list to "Eeek! Art that goes against my religious sensibilities is being subsidized!"

It's a pretty long way down the list before I get to that particular item.

If the pilot's good, see, I mean if he's reeeally sharp, he can barrel that baby in so low... oh you oughta see it sometime. It's a sight. A big plane like a '52... varrrooom! Its jet exhaust... frying chickens in the barnyard!

to destroy that respect over the years as far as symbols go.  The Entire Roman Catholic Eastern Orthodox schism was over symbols. It might be offensive to many Christians, but no one really wants to go to war over it anymore. Fights over "idols" were extremely savage at one time though.

      •  Huh. Who said war ? (0+ / 0-)

I just pointed out that piss Christ wasn't exactly thought of as a cutting edge work of art in some Christina circles. Some protested and spoke of their frustration. It isn't the Middle Ages anymore for Christianity.

    •  Yes, of course Christians respect the symbols (0+ / 0-)

of their faith. (I consider myself to be a "Christian atheist".) But when non-Christians disrespect the symbols of the Christian faith, the Christian thing to do is to turn the other cheek.

About the only thing I get offended by when people make fun of Christianity is when they mock the Atonement. Christianity is about theology, not symbols.
