  •  I used to live in Seattle (7+ / 0-)

As I recall, this Mars Hill guy had a church downtown. Sometimes they play rock 'n' roll music. He tries to be hip in a creepy Christian way. I just looked at that website. He's expanding, like a McDonald's fast food franchise.

The Overlake church is in Bellevue or Redmond or somewhere on the eastside. It's another megachurch led by an extreme homophobe.

    They're both awful.

he's doing very well.  Has cornered the Gen-Y market very commandingly, although Overlake and the Bethany Christian Church are giving him a run for his money.

Fortunately, St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral has a new Dean, a borderline Gen X-er and one who is both very smart and very funny.  Hopefully, we can get a program going to "go where the youth are," and start minister to them - because, to me, Mark Driscoll will forever be a sexist, creepy person.

Maybe he's a minister of the Gospel to some, but it's layered with such misogyny and homophobia, it's hard to find the "good news."

were married at St. Mark's -- lovely cathedral (need to get to a service there next time Mr. Scribe and I are up in Seattle).

Considering the location, they should really expand their ministry to the UW community -- that would be a great start. I went to a church in high school and college/early career that had a strong College/Careers group; they didn't meet at the church but rather at a local restaurant that had a big banquet room; folks could get their coffee/goodies then settle in for discussion of a current topic then a brief worship service. It's a good way to get folks who might feel uncomfortable going to an actual "church".

Driscoll reminds me of the Anne Lamott saying: "You can tell you've created God in your own image when God hates all the same people you do."

for their compline service on Sunday night. It's a men's choir singing songs. Like a free concert.

Plus, I liked them because their preacher (who's gay) was friends with Bishop Desmond Tutu. Tutu spoke there once or twice.
