      The western church (what became the Roman Catholics) monks in Spain had what was called the "odor of sanctity".  I don't know how popular that idea was in the east.  The churches split after about 1050 (1054?) over papal infallibility and priest marriage (i.e. hierarchical power and money), so there were other differences in the religious culture as well.  But your exact question, not sure, sorry.
