to those who want to say they go to a church, but prefer general anonymity -- with a mega-church, you can attend and never get involved with anyone else, much less have someone approach you to serve on the Vestry or bring a covered dish to the next church potluck. For those who do want more connection, there are groups that suits anyone's particular needs, from newlyweds to parents of young children to singles just starting out to seniors learning to start again after the loss of a spouse.

    •  such customer friendly resources are a draw. (0+ / 0-)

But these are customers.  Not members.  They are in it for themselves and that is a volatile basis upon which to found anything.  People who go to those places always talk about how they come away "feeling good about themselves".  They talk about how it's "fun."  The music is rockin'.  The lattes are delicious.  The classes are edifying.

This is all about themselves.  Nothing like that will last longer than the generation or two who bought in.  It is founded on entitlement and gratification of the customers.

Where is the Crystal Cathedral (the original mega-church)right now?

The crowds abandoned Jesus when he stopped giving them free picnics (John 6).  People are fickle and their tastes change.  Basing a congregation on the wants of consumers (very self-indulgent consumers) is antithetical to the Gospel and it is shifting sand.
