    (ahem...494 mph ..ahem) the only reason they were not any more was that the big contract was cancelled as the jet were just coming in!

      But hey the Spitfire was a great dog fighter, although the range was a limiting factor. I'll throw you a USA bone for that.

      Seriously, too bad Mustangs tended to lose skin and other important parts at speed - especially in a dive. We Americans tend to forget that issue, and the P-38 didnt have that issue.

      A good fighter needs to be fast, have effective guns, maneuver, and bring its pilot back home.

      The Wildcat did some of these things well, and I think is underrated to some degree, considering it went up against the Zero.
