I don't normally get to DKos on the weekends, so I had no idea you guys existed.  The title of this grabbed my eye though as Husband & I are going to have to have our kitchen floor redone.  We're in a townhouse, and they did pretty shoddy construction; subfloor will need to be replaced.  It's uneven, and if you stand on the tiles and shift your weight you can feel them move under you, and several have cracked.  We re-grouted a few times, but the grout cracks easily as well due to the shifting floors.

It's a small kitchen, maybe 10 x 10, but we're going to get estimates from a few places to have contractors handle it (we both have bad backs and I've got bad knees to boot). Was thinking of checking in with the local Home Depot & Lowes, and a local tile shop to see what they have/get estimates.

A lot of the smaller repairs we're handling ourselves (replacing ugly light fixtures etc.)  Glad I found you.

Poke through the old posts and you'll find everything from true professionals to redneck hacks like myself. Just about any project, large or small, ask anything and we'll always try to honestly help as much as we can.

And as the old saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. If you come across something odd, snap a pic and we'll all try to help out. Let me know if you need help putting a pic in comments...it's a bit of a pain.

      the smaller flooring stores.

After visiting Lowes I stopped into a flooring store that had just been opened by a young couple here in Jackson, CA. They had been in the business several years and together they ran the operation pretty much on their own. She looked after the store itself and was very knowledgeable about various flooring choices. Meanwhile, her husband did the installations along with a little help from a part time employee.

Anyway, they gave me a good deal on laminate for my home and did an excellent job of installing it for me. That was back in the fall of 2011 and I'm still very satisfied.

I've also done business with Lowes. They installed some carpet in my previous home just before I sold it and they didn't do a very good job. The tracks for the sliding doors on the bedroom closets had been installed on top of the old carpet, but they were short on carpet and the tracks ended up on the subfloor when they were done. So the doors would no longer reach the tracks.

At the end of the day, I had to raise the tracks to the proper height because they didn't know how to measure for the right amount of carpet.
