  •  Not surprised by fascists joining fascists (8+ / 0-)

Most people may not know but this but one of the longest fascist regimes in history was that of Antonio de Oliveira Salazar/Marcello Caetano in Portugal from the founding of the Estado Novo (New State) by Salazar in 1932 to 1974 (Carnation Revolution).  Salazar was a devout Catholic and mixed a strict adherence to Catholicism with his fascist secret police called the PIDE (Policia Internacional e de Defese do Estado-International Police in the Defense of the State).

So I'm not surprised that in France the Catholic Church and the fascists are joining together to fight the will of the people and try and take over.  Been done before, many times in fact.  Only thing is last time Portugal rose up and overthrew a fascist regime, they did it with carnations.  Last time France rose up and overthrew a fascist/absolutist regime, they did it with guillotines.

Oh and BTW gay marriage and abortions are legal in Portugal.  Maybe the carnations are a better path.

    •  The Vatican has almost always (5+ / 0-)

Sided with authoritarian regimes even if the local Church opposed them.  Salazar, Franco, Pinochet, Vichy, the Argentine junta, Mussolini, even minor thugs like Quebec's Duplessis, all were welcomed by the Cardinals as bulwarks against the Left, so it's little surprise they've made common cause with the French Right.

France's history is full of Churchly power working against democracy, even before the Revolution, so one shouldn't wonder that luminaries such as Diderot said: "When the last king is hanged with the entrails of the last celibate priest, mankind may hope to be happy."
