for.  That's all they are, and that is why these explanations come off as strange and inadequate and beneath these 2 "scholars".

    •  "Scholar" really is a key word, isn't it? (7+ / 0-)

I think the title "scholar" should be rejected for these two after their fiasco and their repeated defense of their incompetent work.  Indeed, their recent editorials are NOT how true scholars react to mistakes; instead, they are revealing their underlying biases.

Sadly, they are not the only one in this boat.  Any economist who biases a report to reach a pre-determined conclusion is not worthy of the title either.   "Prostitute" IS a much better label.   This 2011 NY Times column takes on that case.

I’ve come to think something is rotten in the state of economics. The dismal science, as Thomas Carlyle called it, has been ravaged by the same virus that has corrupted the rest of our national discourse.

Economists cluster in ideological think tanks that promote political conformity rather than intellectual rigor. Politicians, with no generally accepted consensus to challenge them, can get away with plucking data out of context to bolster assertions that are based more on faith than on reality. Tax cuts pay for themselves!
