was what I had handy at the moment I wrote the comment, but I had heard a much more positive take on Letta's choice on NPR  that morning. It was discussed in the context of Europe starting to reject (finally) austerity, especially Italy and Spain, where the unemployment numbers, and especially the youth unemployment numbers, are horrifying.

"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."........ "The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little." (yeah, same guy.)

      Not yetta, anyway.

I was struck by the casual bit of editorializing with the Times claiming Monti was trying for "changes to invigorate Italy's economy". No he wasn't really. He was just pushing for more and more Austerity.

The economic-religious belief at the Times,  as here permeating every article, is that Austerity will invigorate an economy. As we now know, the main economic paper (the New Austerian Testament by Rogoff and Reinhardt?) supporting that cultish view was a fraud. Will the Times continue to state as fact that those favoring Austerian policies actually are trying for  "changes to invigorate [the] economy"?

their own columnists. At least not a certain one.

The other thing about Letta that leaves me gobsmacked, though, is that Berlusconi was still the kingmaker. Gah!
