    absent a U.S./NATO intervention, is that Assad remains in power. Russia will continue to block action at the U.N., while Iran will back him to the end with money & arms. Iraq has (for obvious reasons) cast its lot with the Syrian government too, even to the point of allowing shipments of weapons & materiel across its territory.

    Right now, the rebels are not winning. For 2 years we've heard the steady drumbeat that "Assad's days are numbered", "defections continue to mount" & "the rebels are gaining ground". I'm not buying it. In fact, recent reports that I've seen seem to suggest that the Syrian military is starting to gain the upper hand. This development, perhaps, is what is really behind all this clamor from Israel & John McCain & the U.S. media about chemical weapons & "red lines" being crossed.
