This is one thing that works like a charm.  When you get one of those crackpot conspiracy theory type letters, present the facts as you have done.....then send it
    to everyone on the list.

It's a good way to put a kink in the Sean Hannity/Glenn Beck/Rush Limbaugh fueled craziness.

    •  I did this with a close friend who (10+ / 0-)

did not realize she was circulating RW propaganda disguised as reasonable.

I was very polite, asking not to circulate it.  One daughter went ballistic and called me out.  The other wrote a subtle defense of my posting.

I can't even fathom the amount of harm we have endured from Facebook alone.  And to find out that Zuckerberg is a creep puts the icing on the cake.

My students cannot resist playing with it in class under dire threat.  They just can't.  I is uncanny how addicted they are and apparently there is a name for it which I have forgotten.

Maybe it's just the fact that most of my friends are liberal, but I've seen more pushback against right-wing bullshit on Facebook than I ever saw in the chain-email days. It's rare that I see a right-wing post on Facebook from my conservative friends or family members that doesn't have a comment or two in there pointing out the facts (and when I do see a comment-less right-wing post, I'm the one who comments :-) ).

And Facebook has been used to bring attention to and fight local injustices that might never have gotten national attention otherwise, like the Steubenville rape case, or segregated proms in the South... and spread very left-wing-friendly memes and articles to those who might not have otherwise had those resources.

Yeah, Zuckerberg's a jackass, no disagreement there... and Facebook is a serial violator of privacy, like every other large tech company out there. But in my experience, the emergence of Facebook as a tool for political engagement has been a net positive for liberals—much better than the chain-email days.

I always thank them and ask them to include me in the future so I can continue to help them with their fact checking.

I usually also give them a fact checking tip...Google a key word and "snopes."

The weirdest one I got was an email that had a LINK to Snopes.  I checked out and then replied-all that, if they would check their own link, they would see Snopes actually debunked what they were saying in their email.

That happened more than once by the way.  A new right wing tactic?  They probably assume most people won't check.
