  •  we're lucky, the trees we inherited here are ALL (6+ / 0-)

deciduous. AND otherwise pretty well placed.

Like, in the NE corner we have a birch which pretty much doesn't shade anything. In the center back, the giant catalpa-of-annoyance which LIGHTLY shades most of the back yard for most of the summer, but is leafless during the dark depths of winter when we need all the light we can get!

the SE corner of the house has a volunteer filbert, just exactly where it needs to be to shade in the summer and let the sun through in the winter.

In the center West side, on the street side are our two maples, the big street tree right at the curb, and the Japanese maple between it and the front door! So we can lock the screen door and leave the front door open after sundown, all summer long! We could use a little more light on the veg plots at the east end but we work with what we get; but we certainly do have a few things around that would appreciate some more sun!

"real" work : a job where you wash your hands BEFORE you use the bathroom...
