Putting in a pond is back breaking, but the most satisfying thing I feel I did in my garden.

I did start out with a preform in the late 80s, then eventually upgraded to liners.  I redid the original pond (now taken down since I moved it all to the back area of the yard) at least 5 times in its lifetime.  Finally, the space it was placed couldn't allow any more expansions.

Now I have about a 2000 gallon pond... So not huge by pond standards, but i also wanted room for a garden! ;-)

Depending on where you live determines how deep you may have to dig.  In areas where it gets cold in winter and things freeze, if you're going to keep cold water fish, you need to dig at least 3 feet if not more.  I have some parts of my pond at 4 feet.

I don't use chemicals or algae killers in my ponds either.  A pond evolves over time... And after a couple of years, good bacteria does establish itself well. There may be an algae bloom, but this should take care of itself... Or you can invest n a ultraviolet light filter.

And you do have to plan for predators... Design so predators aren't getting easy meals. And create hide aways for fish, too.

If you have wide open space, borrow or rent a backhoe! Lol will save time.

For a falls you need an electrical source.  I wish i had space for a stream.

All the suffering of this world arises from a wrong attitude. The world is neither good or bad. It is only the relation to our ego that makes it seem the one or the other - Lama Anagorika Govinda
