  •  The disenchantment with the VietNam war began with (6+ / 0-)

the Tet Offensive where a series of attacks were launched against urban centers in South VietNam by the Viet Cong that gave the impression that nothing in Viet Nam was safe from attack.  The military is fond of stating that the Tet Offensive was an utter failure in military terms, the scenes of the shooting and the partial takeover of the US embassy in Saigon gave visual contrast to the steady stream of happy talk coming from the US military authorities forecasting that a US victory was just around the corner.

In the wake of Tet, the famous Walter Cronkite tour and report stating that the US should begin to negotiate a peace and get out of the war was the turning point in US public opinion that led to the eventual end of US direct military involvement.
