  •  I'm always torn on whether appropriate. (19+ / 0-)

But darn, it was brilliant. My favorite line is still that the president stands firm on his beliefs Wednesday as he did Monday no matter what happened Tuesday. I mean, that really was a huge part of the problem wasn't it?

I tend to prefer Jon Stewart, who I think would have been more polite in the setting, but Colbert showed balls of steel there. I don't know how he got through that speech to power, and I admire it.

I always love watching the end, where President Bush can barely stand to shake his hand, the First Lady acknowledges him as little as is remotely polite and he and Helen Thomas share a hug.

But the bigger thing, in a way, was the contempt for the media. And they deserved it. They hated it, but they deserved it as much as the president.

    •  When you think about the true purpose (19+ / 0-)

of government, to serve the peoples' interests, meaning that it and its people work for us, then you realize that they deserve not an ounce more respect or reverence than any of us do, and there's nothing wrong with making fun of them or disrespecting them when warranted. We take the pomposity of much of government for granted and this is how we are made to realize that it's all bullshit. They need to be brought down a peg continually so they remember who they work for. Colbert just had the guts to do it.
