Jason Collins is a low mid-level player and a center. Centers are always needed (job security=7' centers and left handed pitchers) and the skill level bar is a little lower for centers. Teams need guys like him to come off the bench and provide size or in practice or to even start sometimes because that center bar is low and he's good enough. Hence, a player of Jason's ability has managed a 12 year career in the NBA. Hes also been known as a good teammate.

Hes not a star. He is a person worth having on a team. He never has or will earn 20mil a year. You can get him at a salary cap friendly price of like 5 mil a year.

Why is this relevant? Because Jason is a free agent this season. He does not have a job as an NBA center for the 2013/2014 season. His 2012/2013 is over. He is not in the playoffs, which started last weekend (go knicks!).

Will he get offers from teams this off season? Will he now be offered a job on an NBA team? This could be revealing and is a reason not forget this story during the summer.

I cant tell if its a West End musical or Marxism in action.

    •  Might make his chances better (15+ / 0-)

I am a member of Outsports, a web site for gay athletes and sports fans that was just bought by SB Nation. For years we have discussed the scenarios that might lead to this moment, and one of them was a journeyman player in the waning days of his career that wants/needs the publicity, not to  mention the endorsements, that would come with coming out.

The NBA has already made its support for Collins clear, as have the Wizards, and Mark Cuban has already stated he wants to sign the first out player. If Collins doesn't get signed after this announcement, the league looks a bit homophobic, so I think this might give him an edge in getting a contract with a team. I doubt he'll play much, or for many more seasons, but I would be surprised if he doesn't at least get an offer out of this. Plus, he is likely now in line for endorsements he would never have gotten as a run-of-the-mill straight player.

San Antonio, they should at least take a look at Collins.  He seems to be a hard-working, lunch pail type of guy and if he is affordable would be a good back-up center which the Lakers need.

There will be some changes in the Laker roster and I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the mix.
