the candidate can't create local support.

In fact, progressive candidates can and do find local support here in South Dakota.

Back in 2010, in just a handful of days, Dr. Kevin Weiland needed to gather 1,213 petition signatures to challenge Stephanie Herseth Sandlin in a primary.  Her stance on Obama's health care was the very thing that compelled him to consider entering.

In an astonishingly short period of time, not only did he garner those 1,213 signatures, but 1,100 of them were gained in the Black Hills--typically a very Republican area of our state.  In fact, at the end of the day, he ended up with more than 3,800 names of supporters.

The energy behind that movement was palpable, and the shock and disappointment when he was pushed out was as well.

Now, to present time, it is worth noting that on the FB Draft Brendan Johnson site, we have 4,733 likes.

          Run Stephanie has 1,072.

Many significant names from our State Party have stood up to place their support behind the Draft Brendan cause--a cause that names itself quite clearly as progressive. Former State Senate Minority Leader Scott Heideprim, US Senator James Abourezk, Dr. Kevin Weiland, and at least 5 County Party Chairs have stood behind the Draft Brendan Johnson movement.

          Prairie values are progressive values.

In fact, it's the locals who know it.  It's the out-of-towners who don't.

But, like other commentators have noted, Progressives haven't exactly received support from the national Dems when we've given it the old college try.  Were we to have and were we to....but more on the specifics of that "if-only" in my reply below to the comment regarding the presence of local support for progressive candidates.
