    She's more heroic, and basically said as much this morning, but he's more heroic than the unknown number of other gar male team-sports athletes in the US who haven't come out.

    This all reminds me of the occasional notion that someone is "brave" for saying this or that on Daily Kos!  Sure, braver than keeping one's unpopular views under wraps, but hey, you're an anonymous person on a website, so let's not get all crazy.

      She came out in an indivdual sport. She didn't have any managers or coaches who could limit her playing time or throw her off a team. In fact, until some of the WNBA players started coming out, it was athletes in individual sports - tennis, swimming, skating - who were the first to come out. It was undoubtedly harder for Martina, given the time, but her future was always in her (more than capable) hands.

        ...from being a political refugee.  Americans otherwise hostile to gay rights may have tolerated her coming out as an expression of freedom that wasn't open to her in her home country.
