  •  Interesting story about Susan Hinton (6+ / 0-)

I invited her to speak at a large library where I was working in the 70's.  She talked about writing The Outsiders when she was in high school and how she would tell her friends the story and they would make comments.  Some of them told her "there has to be a fire" and she took their advice and slipped it into the story.

She also addressed the young writers in the audience by telling them to "just write and keep on writing.  Don't worry about your grammar.  There are people called 'editors' who will fix that for you.  Your job is just to tell a good story."

One of the mothers got up during the Q & A period and said, "I am here because I thought you were a man." Hinton told her she was not alone.

I had met Susie at several American Library Association conventions and she was very shy and unassuming.  I always thought Rumble Fish was her best book, but you cannot beat The Outsiders for its influence and how teenagers, often those who seldom read, love it.,

Just waitin' around for the new Amy Winehouse album

    •  What a great story... (4+ / 0-)

I am peagreen that you knew her!

      I agree:

I taught it at night school for that very reason.  I had one student who had been badly injured in a fight and I didn't know that when we started the story since he was from a different school district.

I asked him if it bothered him to read the story and he said no.  We were also reading new articles about various types of jobs and he said the lady in the story about paramedics had saved his life the night he was injured.

Later on when he graduated he came over and hugged me and thanked me for helping him get through.

      Night school was interesting.
