  •  The only thing Yoko Ono ever said that wasn't (11+ / 0-)

    just stupid self-indulgent pseudo-intellectual self-impressed un-art was this:

Woman is the nigger of the world
But I doubt whether that's the sort of interpretation Ms. Plasko has in mind.

To put the torture behind us is, inevitably, to put it in front of us.

It's not either/or with WOC, when they hear a phrase meant to commiserate with them as women - that slaps them as black people.

Just because Ms Ono is a WOC herself doesn't mean she didn't do a racist thing by using that word in her song.

    •  I remember that song. (0+ / 0-)

      Wow, I'm old!

    •  there was a small movement in the 70s (0+ / 0-)

to make that word be an overall descriptive term for the downtrodden of the world.

patti smith followed up similarly in '78 w/ "rock 'n roll nigger."

the transformation of the meaning of the word never quite took off, however.

hope springs eternal and DAMN is she getting tired!

frankly, it shows cultural ignorance and a lack of respect.

is that the game you wanna play? hang on while i light up a clove cigarette, and we can click our fingers ironically to each others' bon mots.

no, you're right, i'm not in with the in crowd. such a philistine, moi. i'm, like, totally illiterate, culturally. i probably don't even know where my own pseudonym comes from.

if john lennon, a confused, drug-addled, angry, lost soul hadn't bumbled his way up the ladder in YO's gallery that one afternoon, neither you nor i would have ever known she existed. of course, i admit my original generalization was unfair, in that i've hardly made a thorough study of her oeuvre -- but then, maybe that's because i've never been able to sit through more than about 15 seconds of anything she's ever produced, including plain old interviews, in which she invariably comes off as an idiot.
